Things are looking ugly at Double Punch

Quirky Kaiju, bossy bears, cake eating spiders, and dolls so ugly they're charming have taken over Double Punch's gallery space in "Things." The show is a collection of, er, things that Uglydoll creators Sun Min Kim and David Horvath have created over the past 7 years since launching Uglydolls. Other works in "Things" include Bossy Bear, LittleBony, Choco & Minty, etc. 

Many of the items on display are extremely rare and long sold out. Have you seen the LittleBony DVD or CD at your local Best Buy? Nope? Uh-huh. I thought not.

The show ends Nov. 2. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for kids (under 14), plus you get a little gift too (refund if you purchase something). 

And sold exclusively at DP (and their webstore) for "Things" is the Lonely Otaku print for $50. This print is a limited run of 50.

I picked up a mini Moxy. She's magenta. I had to. And she matched my outfit that day too.

Guide to Uglyness

2008 is going to be quite an ugly year . . . I mean that in a good and very strangely cute way though. 

Uglydolls just launched their brand spankin' new site! Go around Uglytown with Babo and shop, read the blog, participate on the forum, download wallpapers and icons, and [coming soon] play games.

Also out right now are Cinko (who got a bit of a makeover) and Sun-Tan Target. Later on in the year, five new Uglydolls will be added to the family including Puglee, Ugly Ghost, Poe, Babo's Bird, and Plunko. All of these guys come straight from the pages of the Ugly Guides.

"What dat?" you ask? 

The Ugly Guides are a set of books (The Ugly Guide to the Uglyverse, Ugly Guide to Thing That Should Go and Things That Should Go But Don't) that'll show you the world of Uglydolls -- where they eat, what hospital they go to when they get boo-boos, where they go to get some R&R, and what each Ugly is all about. Those books will be released on April 22.

Nice to Meet You, Blythe!

Alrighty, so I know I wrote this blog about Blythe dolls quite some time ago and said I'd talk about all these really neato stuff about the underground cult they've got going on. So here it is! Part II . . .

Sometimes people who have Blythe dolls gather in various places and have these things called Blythe Meets. What do people do there exactly? I don't know! What I do know is that some involve contests where you can win prizes, and of course theres the photo-ops, but I think their main purpose is to unite Blythe fans of all ages to sit down and talk about their hobby (collecting Blythes, etc.) without someone rolling their eyes at you . . .

The one my friends and I had was quite informal -- we all went to the Dell'Osso Farms Pumpkin Patch in Lathrop, Ca and galavanted around taking pictures. Ashley and I only have one doll each (and I brought my two mini Uglydolls too) so we didn't have much on our hands, but my friend Jean has four dolls and she brought ALL OF THEM with her!

Ashley and I got many funny stares from people, so you can only imagine the looks we got once Jean took all of hers out! Oh well, we had fun and got some good shots -- despite the sunlight being a big challenge for us. Some curious onlookers asked us what we were taking pictures of and we heard one say, "Oh, its just Barbies." HaHaHa . . .

Horvath is my Homie

After David Horvath (ya know, the "Uglydolls Dude" whose stuff I've written about how many times?) doodled a little Babo and Ice Bat in my notebook at his Giant Robot signing on Saturday, I asked if he could take a picture with our [Okee Dorkee] logo. Yee!

It's kinda weird 'cause people like him (artists who create super awesome things) are like celebrities to me, so I was super nervous when I asked. I mean, I did a friggin speech on the Uglydoll company for my communications class last year (and got an A)!!! But he was really nice :D

I swear, my fingers were all shaky when I was handing him my card . . . he probably thinks I'm a nerd. I guess he'd be right :P

If you guys haven't checked out any of his stuff (or his wife/Uglydolls co-creator Sun Min Kim's things), what are you waiting for??? You'll thank me later. Chronicle Books have produced some really sweet Uglydolls stationary, notebooks, address books, postcards, etc.

But anywho, don't forget to check back with us and all the things we've seen, done, and bought at Comic Con! Like I said before, we got lots to write about. Lots.

Comic Con Gets Ugly, Bossy, and Bony!

David Horvath, co-creator of the infamous Uglydolls, has posted his Comic Con signing schedule on his own blog. So if you're interested in seeing him, grab a pen -- or go high tech and print this out and plan out your itinerary.

Saturday 12:30 - 2:00

* Giant Robot Booth: Signing Bossy Bear, Uma, Glow Flatwoods, Uglydolls, Littlebony, and whatever else you may want signed!

Saturday 3:00 - 5:00
* Uglydolls Booth: Uglydoll items only. Please note, David said he will only be signing Uglydoll items at the Uglydolls booth signing due to the massive crowds they had last year (believe me, it was huge! I actually left . . . haha.) He didn't say anything about Sun Min not signing Spider Boom items though.

Sunday 11:00 - 12:00

* Disney Booth: Bossy Bear signing. Disney will be giving away 200 Bossy Bear books to 200 people during the signing!

Sunday 12:30 - 2:00

* Giant Robot Booth: Same stuff he said he'd be signing at Saturday's GR session.

Please note, Littlebony is kind of a special dude. He's only sold in Japan where he's got his own little show and Giant Robot is the only place in the US that sells his swag. Therefore, the GR booth will be the only booth to have Littlebony! Woo-hoo!

Also, making an early debut is the newest addition to the Ugly family: Abima! He won't be available (to the public) until August/September, but he will be for sale at Con.

Double Punch

In 2004, the online retail store Ningyoushi opened up shop with Double Punch in San Francisco. Before heading to the Shooting Gallery for the Shag show, my friends and I stopped by Double Punch to check out the goodies they had to offer, and boy did we find ourselves in oh-so-cute-things nirvana.

Double Punch has a vast array of Japanese and Western toys (vinly, plastic, plush -- you name it), stationary, art books, art prints, t-shirts, baby clothes, and accessories. Tokidoki, Blythe, Gama-Go, Pinky Street, Uglydolls . . . soooo many things to name and list! It's absolutely ridonculous -- in a good way :)

The first floor of the store is filled with art books, tons of little Kubrick figures and little mini toys lined along the upper walls, display cases showing off vinyl toys and tables with little blind-boxed tokens from here [America] and Asia. There were even little do-dads from Hong Kong Disneyland (sorry, I forgot to take a picture of it)! I let out audible Oohs and Ahs every other second because I kept seeing things I wanted!

There was tons of Gama-Go gear up here. I also saw some Gloomy Bear and 12 Grain shirts.

I managed to walk away with some pretty sweet swag . . .

I bought a Lala Blythe keychain (which I plan to convert into a necklace), Tokidoki Moofia toy, Minnie Mouse keychain, and two Fortune Pork mini plushes by Tado. Orginally, I just bought one (got the orange one which says "I LOVE YOUR FRISKY HEAT" on the back), but I liked it so much and there was only one more left, so I went ahead and got it. And ya know what? It ended up being Albert, the mystery character! How sweet is that?

Double Punch is located on 1821 Powell Street 94133. It's definitely worth a visit, but if you can't make a trip to Double Punch, there's always their online store.

Bossy Bear: He wants everything HIS way!

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. But who gives a crap about him when there's Bossy Bear?!

Bossy Bear, the little blue bear clad in a red cape with a crown upon his noggin, comes from the insanely creative mind of David Horvath, co-creator of Uglydolls. Bossy Bear is his picture book debut. Woo-hoo!
The story is about a bear who is, uh, bossy. He wants everything HIS way, and he wants it NOW! This book will have readers recognizing - and laughing at - their own bossy tendencies, or so Barnes & Noble says. They also said that this book is targeted towards infants and preschool kids -- but that isn't stopping me from getting a copy! We're all kids at heart anyways, aren't we?

And to add more fun to the hoopla that is Bossy Bear, there's going to be four, count 'em FOUR, vinyl figures!

You can get Bossy Bear looking this way, that way, sideways, and front ways. What fun! I think I like him looking that way. I'm not sure when those bossy boys are coming out, but the book is to be released in May.
