Party like a Super Hero!

For those who didn't get enough fun on July 24, the first day of the San Diego International ComicCon, comes the Superhero Live Music and Art Party, hosted by San Diego graphic agency Ninthlink and Murphy Art Books!

Make sure you're dressed up as your favorite superhero (or villian) because from 7pm to Midnight the free, 21+ event will happen at the Warehouse Space located at 1616 National Avenue, San Diego 92113. Among the featured artists' works include Anthony Lister, Jeff Soto, Joel Nakamura, Jen Lobo, Matt Stallings, Luke Chueh, Mark Todd, Esther Pearl Watson, Martha Rich, R.G., Peter Taylor (Handmade Feet), Andy Howell, Kathie Olivas, Chris Ryniak, Lola, Germs, Marco Wagner, Mark Murphy and many more. All of the art exhibited will also be available to be sold. Plus there will be plenty of finger foods and sushi plus Effen Vodka drinks, plus live music from the Modlins and DJs SSI.

Sara Bareilles

Well over a month ago, I met up with carmeL to see Sara Bareilles, an up-n-coming-freakishly-talented new artist, at the Virgin Megastore for her in-store performance and signing. Remember I said I'd write about it in another blog (a long, long time ago)? Anywho, It didn't start until 1:00, so my friend, Ashley, and I figured we'd go back to Virgin around 11:30ish so we could get a good spot -- but no one was even there yet! Except we got to see Sara and her two bandmates setting up shop. So basically we got to see them do soundcheck. It was flippin' sweet and she sounded amazing. Seriously, this girl's got a set of crazy pipes on her.

All in all, her performance was awesome, she was a sweetheart (I forgot to ask to take a picture with her and then she saw me off on the side and told me to come over to take one!), and starting tomorrow, October 16, she will be featured on VH1 as a You Oughta Know Artist. Keep an eye out for her and her debut single "Love Song".
I knew she was gonna get huge and carmeL predicted the same thing!

Under the Blacklight

After three years of waiting since their last album More Adventurous, Rilo Kiley is back! Their fourth album, and major label debut, Under the Blacklight drops on Tuesday, August 21.

When I first heard the album's first single, "The Moneymaker", I have to say I was confused on whether I liked it or not. Sure the hook was catchy and it made my head bob, but it just didn't sound like the Rilo Kiley I was so used to -- folky, kinda rockish, and serene-like. Some fans might even call them sellouts, but not I!

"The Moneymaker" has grown on me and after previewing Under the Blacklight's 11 tracks on Rilo Kiley's MySpace, I'm comfortable to say they're still the Rilo Kiley I've grown to love oh-so-much :)

I almost feel like this album should've been called More Adventurous because they've experimented with electro beats, soul-singin' back up vocalists, and even have a few uptempo numbers -- there's even one with some Spanish ("Dejalo")! The two tracks I like most are "Silver Lining" and "Breakin' Up". That'll probably change once I listen to it more.

If you haven't heard of Rilo Kiley before (where've ya been?), I suggest you check out their first 3 albums: Take Offs and Landings, The Execution of All Things, and the aforementioned More Adventurous.

Name That Band!

I came across this in a bulletin on myspace. Virgin Digital had a contest to name as many bands hidden within the following picture. The contest is long since over but that doesn't mean it's lost its fun!

There were supposedly 75 bands hidden here. C'mon peeps... wow us with your musical smarts. How many can you name? I'll even start it off with Radiohead (dude in the middle w/the boombox.)

I've liked the song since I got the Fergie cd back in September 2006, but now I love watching the video because Peter Petrelli...errr...Milo Ventimiglia is a video hunk, well sorta, he's gangsta! haha...riiiiight. i love the tatts...riiiight. Ha, i've also been on the lookout for Gilmore Girls reruns...darn that bad boy Jess...we love dean! haha...i know im such a dork. Maybe Milo will be at the Con?

Lily Allen: Cheeky Brit and fellow Dork

Awhile back, carmeL burnt me a copy of Lily Allen's debut Alright, Still. This was probably back in March and I didn't start listening to it until mid-April. I haven't been able to listen to anything else since! I listened to it so much that two songs skip now. Yep, I'm that obsessed. I went out and bought her album because having a burnt copy that skips was not satisfying enough!

Lily Allen is my wake-up in the morning-get ready music, shower music and gym music. All her poppy-R&B fused songs are upbeat enough to keep me going on the eliptical for 35 (and sometimes 50) minutes. I even bought 'Knock 'Em Out' as my ringtone for unknown callers.

She's a Brit, so naturally she's quite cheeky. My favortie song on the album is 'Everything's Just Wonderful' which is pretty much a big "F-You" to the government and society's perception on certain issues like women's body images.

The lyrics I like from that song are:
I wanna be able to eat spaghetti bolognaise,
and not feel bad about it for days and days and days.
In the magazines they talk about weight loss
If I buy those jeans I can look like Kate Moss
Oh no it's not the life I chose,
But I guess that's the way that things go

Alright, Still is an amazing debut. Whether she's singing about a bad break up with a guy who lacks in the size department, her weed smoking kid brother, or grandma who still buys tampons just 'cause she has coupons, I find myself singing along (often loudly), bopping my head and shaking my rhythmically-challenged booty to the beat.

If you have yet to hear Lily Allen, I suggest you leave this page and Google her or check out her MySpace! Plus Lily's got some Okee Dorkee cred too; she recorded her first single 'Smile' in Simlish -- the language characters in the Sims games speak. Check out both versions below . . .
